Ngorongoro Crater

The Eden of Africa

Best Time to Visit

June – October for peak wildlife viewing; January – February for recommended calving season views.

Recommendation

Stay on the crater rim directly to witness the iconic sunrise burning through the caldera mist into absolute gold.

A Natural Wonder

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, unbroken, and unfilled volcanic caldera. Formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some three million years ago, the crater is now home to over 25,000 large animals, including some of Africa’s last remaining black rhinos.

The Big Five Haven

Within the crater rim boundaries, the wildlife count is staggering. Prides of lions, herds of buffalo, zebra, and some of the largest tuskers in East Africa frequent the caldera floor. It is also one of the best locations to spot the highly endangered Black Rhino.

Sunrise At The Rim

Perched 600 meters above the floor, the rim offers magnificent panoramic outlooks. Watch the mist wrap over the crater edges as you prepare for your early morning descent into the wild sanctuary below.
